Friedman: republikijnen kleuren groen

I am sitting with Senator Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican, who, along with John Kerry and Joe Lieberman, is trying to craft a new energy bill — one that could actually win 60 votes. What is interesting about Graham is that he has been willing — courageously in my view — to depart from the prevailing G.O.P. consensus that the only energy policy we need is “drill, baby, drill.”

What brought you around, I ask? Graham’s short answer: politics, jobs and legacy. We start with politics. The Republican Party today has a major outreach problem with two important constituencies, “Hispanics and young people,” Graham explains:

“I have been to enough college campuses to know if you are 30 or younger this climate issue is not a debate. It’s a value. These young people grew up with recycling and a sensitivity to the environment — and the world will be better off for it. They are not brainwashed. ... From a Republican point of view, we should buy into it and embrace it and not belittle them. You can have a genuine debate about the science of climate change, but when you say that those who believe it are buying a hoax and are wacky people you are putting at risk your party’s future with younger people. You can have a legitimate dispute about how to solve immigration, but when you start focusing on the last names of people the demographics will pass you by.”

So Graham’s approach to bringing around his conservative state has been simple: avoid talking about “climate change,” which many on the right don’t believe. Instead, frame our energy challenge as a need to “clean up carbon pollution,” to “become energy independent” and to “create more good jobs and new industries for South Carolinians.” He proposes “putting a price on carbon,” starting with a very focused carbon tax, as opposed to an economywide cap-and-trade system, so as to spur both consumers and industries to invest in and buy new clean energy products. He includes nuclear energy, and insists on permitting more offshore drilling for oil and gas to give us more domestic sources, as we bridge to a new clean energy economy.

“Cap-and-trade as we know it is dead, but the issue of cleaning up the air and energy independence should not die — and you will never have energy independence without pricing carbon,” Graham argues. “The technology doesn’t make sense until you price carbon. Nuclear power is a bet on cleaner air. Wind and solar is a bet on cleaner air. You make those bets assuming that cleaning the air will become more profitable than leaving the air dirty, and the only way it will be so is if the government puts some sticks on the table — not just carrots. The future economy of America and the jobs of the future are going to be tied to cleaning up the air, and in the process of cleaning up the air this country becomes energy independent and our national security is greatly enhanced.”

IT IS all too easy, given today’s 24-hour news cycle, to become obsessed with short-term movements in financial markets. But investors must learn to focus on the long term.

The final return of an equity investor is highly dependent on when he starts to put money in. In real (inflation-adjusted) terms, British equity prices reached peaks in 1906, 1936, 1968 and 1999, according to the Barclays Capital Equity-Gilt study. The regularity of the intervals between these summits is remarkable and will undoubtedly encourage believers in “long wave” theories (Wall Street’s peaks, in real terms, occurred in 1928, 1968 and 1999). The patterns suggest that each generation discovers a passion for equity investment that is followed by disappointment.

Strikingly, the recent year-end trough in this inflation-adjusted index, in 2008, was only fractionally higher than the peak in 1968. Investors had made no capital gains in real terms over 40 years although, of course, they had enjoyed the benefits of a dividend income throughout this period. But this long drought was far from unique. At the British economy’s nadir of 1974, the era of the three-day week, equities traded for just 30% of their real value at the end of the 19th century.

When markets are booming, however, commentators tend to look back at the performance of stocks and extrapolate an even rosier future. In 1929 John Raskob, a director of General Motors, wrote an article in the Ladies’ Home Journal entitled “Everybody Ought to Be Rich”. Mr Raskob calculated that an investment of just $15 a month would, with dividends reinvested, grow into $80,000 after 20 years.

In the mid-1990s Jeremy Siegel of the Wharton School produced “Stocks for the Long Run”, an impressive work of scholarship showing that American equities had outperformed other asset classes over all 20-year periods. This insight was extrapolated by James Glassman and Kevin Hassett into a book called “Dow 36,000”, based on the idea that equities should trade at much higher valuations given that they were no more risky than bonds for long-term investors.

In the event, the “noughties” decade produced average real returns (including income) of -2.2% a year from American equities and -1.2% a year from British shares. Over the 20 years to the end of 2009 American equities barely beat government bonds, and British shares lagged gilts.

Of course, it was the belief in ever-rising share prices that pushed stockmarket valuations to absurd levels and thus ensured subsequent underperformance. A similar process happened in Japan in the 1980s. Share prices in Tokyo are still trading at only a quarter of their 1989 peak levels.

The obvious parallel is with house prices. Analysts were convinced that American house prices might suffer regional busts but would not fall at the national level. The idea of housing as a one-way bet fuelled the boom in subprime lending and pushed prices up to a peak from which they could only fall. Robert Shiller of Yale University has pointed out that, in real terms, an index of American house prices rose from 100 in 1890 to 110 by the end of the 20th century. By the end of 2006, at the top of the housing boom, the index had reached 199.

Are these preferences for asset classes driven by some underlying factor, rather as John Maynard Keynes argued that practical men were often slaves to the writings of some “defunct economist”? Tim Bond of Barclays Capital argues that demography may be to blame. The key “saving age” is the cohort of 35-54 year-olds. As they prepare for retirement, they pile into the asset class du jour. Mr Bond shows that since the second world war there has been a close correlation between American equity valuations and the proportion of 35-54 year-olds in the population. That the “noughties” proved to be a dismal decade for equities was hardly surprising. The number of retirees (who run down their portfolios) was rising relative to the number of savers.

The bad news is that the demographic maths imply that equity valuations will continue to fall until the middle of this decade. The news is even worse for government bonds. A similar model suggests that yields in both America and Britain are heading for 10% by 2020.

So demography drives investment fashion, and fashion determines valuations. In turn the long-term return is crucially dependent on the starting valuation. American equities now offer a dividend yield of just 2%, less than half the long-term average. Investors should remember that salutary statistic whenever they are tempted to get too bullish.

Mr Doom & Gloom herrijst

LT voorkeur: 1.India, 2. Indonesië en 3. Turkije, 4 Brazilië
Brazilië verbetert als Lula niet herkozen wordt. Dan nieuw verhaal van meer investeren.
Zuid Afrika is zeerslecht door politiek. Men investeert alleen in bouw (wereldkamoioenschap voetbal +OS), niet in softare & equipment. Productiviteitsstijging daarom slecht. lLoonstijging is hoog.

JPM global datawatch 5 feb 2010

China verkrapt vooral vanwege overspeculatie in onroerend goed.

Barrron's optimistisch (14/2/2010)

The US is Great

The US has gone from the Great Moderation to the Great Recession. With the help of the Great Experiment we see now the Great Recovery (the jobrich recovery) that will lead to the Great Inflation.

Debtflation

MS: Last but by no means least, note that the range of inflation rates we have calculated here – around 5% for the case of a roughly zero primary balance – are already being debated in policy circles. Former IMF chief economist Kenneth Rogoff has advocated a 4-6% inflation target for the Fed, and ex Bank of England MPC member David Blanchflower has made similar proposals. And Professors Aizenman and Marion calculate – in a different framework – that a “moderate” inflation rate of 6% could reduce the debt/GDP ratio by 10 percentage points within four years (see “Using Inflation to Erode the US Public Debt” NBER Working Paper 15562).

Pijngrens is 4% CPI.

Nederland is hypochonder geworden

Flexible Mafia gains in hard times

Italy’s Mafia is adapting well to the economic crisis, boosting output but cutting labour costs and benefiting from the credit crunch in the banking sector, according to a report released by a leading business association.
While Italy’s gross domestic product shrank by 5 per cent last year, organised crime managed to increase turnover by an estimated 3.7 per cent to €135bn ($190bn, £118bn).
“Mafia Inc doesn’t fear or know crisis,” the report said. “During an economic slump, the Mafia’s money, even though it’s dirty, is mouthwatering.”
It is alarming that the “Mafia’s balance sheet grows although there is strong state pressure and an ongoing economic ¬crisis,” said Marco Venturi, chairman of Confesercenti, whose SOS Impresa unit helps enterprises deal with organised crime. The annual “Mafia Inc balance sheet” is based on official reports and its own research.
The mob has flourished during the economic crisis in part because its criminal enterprises are cash-based. Mr Venturi noted a sharp increase in usury, with the Mafia able to charge interest rates of up to 10 per cent a day because of reduced lending by banks. Protection money – pizzo – extorted from about 160,000 shops and enterprises was broadly unchanged, reflecting the difficult times facing the victims.
“With the €24bn turnover of racket and usury activities alone, 200,000 jobs could be created,” he said, noting the loss to the Italian ¬economy.
The report comes at a sensitive moment for Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister. His centre-right government has pointed to the high numbers of arrests of Mafiosi and seizure of their assets to back up its claim to be the toughest on organised crime since Mussolini.
Ministers plan to move their cabinet meeting from Rome to the southern city of Reggio Calabria, a stronghold of the local ’Ndrangheta mob, to demonstrate state resolve not to back down in the face of increased threats.
Commenting on the report, Costantino Garraffa, senator for the opposition Democratic party, said the government risked aiding the Mafia through moves such as a tax amnesty for funds held overseas.
The report – Crime’s Hold on Business – collates the activities of the five main Mafia organisations, estimating they equal about 7 per cent of Italy’s GDP.
Narcotics provides the largest income, estimated at €60bn. “Eco-Mafia” activities, including waste disposal, account for €16bn. Subcontracts, often in construction and the health sector, yield €6.5bn.
Outgoings reveal the Mafia’s flexibility on costs, with its wage bill falling by €500m to €1.2bn. The ability to launder money and move into the real economy is seen in €26bn spent on investments, mostly in construction, trading and tourism. Some €800m was spent on legal fees.
“Mafia Inc is a great entrepreneurial and financial group, with numerous tentacles,” said Lino Busà of SOS Impresa.
